Hi! I’m Jayme Dyer, PhD. I teach Introductory Biology at a community college in North Carolina and I’m always experimenting in the classroom. This newsletter is where I’ll report on what I’m doing, thinking, trying, and learning in the classroom.
In this newsletter, I’ll focus on:
Alternative grading - the grading policies I’m reading about, trying, tweaking, and revising.
Building science literacy - I think it’s essential to integrate teaching what we know with how we know it, especially in introductory-level science courses. I’ll share what I’m doing in the classroom to balance teaching science content with scientific methodology.
Improving equity & inclusion in the classroom - I grew up on welfare and child support, then went through foster care before navigating higher education as a first generation student. I am deeply committed to leveling the playing field for all of my students so everyone has equal access to success.
What’s working, what’s not, and why. No-holds-barred, I’ll be honest with you about my successes and failures in the classroom.
This newsletter is an extension of my blog, which I started in 2022 on my personal website. Previously, I reached readers by sharing links on social media, but some folks wanted email updates, so here we are.
I’m switching to Substack so you can subscribe and get an email notification each time I publish a new post. I’ve moved my original blog posts to Substack, where you can read my archived blog posts.
All my new posts will happen here. I don’t write on a regular schedule; I write when I have something to say! Subscribe to make sure you don’t miss a post.
Cheers,
Jayme
